In 2012, the Chief Officers of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS–IL) Division 54 agreed that there was an urgent need for a Fire Service Honor Guard to assist with
the funerals of our volunteer and career firefighters in the communities that we serve.
The Fire Service is steeped in tradition and, much like the military, it believes in honoring their deceased/fallen firefighters with a funeral protocol that is befitting of the deceased firefighter’s service to his community. It is a ceremony filled with dignity, honor and pride. Most importantly it is a ceremony that offers some comfort to the fallen firefighter’s family and fire department members– especially at a time when they need it the most.
